Dear High School Senior,

Welcome to your final year of high school! I bet you thought senior year would never come, that you would be stuck being an underclassman for eternity. Well, I’m pleased to tell you that you are now the top dog at your school and with that position comes a unique opportunity.

You are one of the eldest students at your school. The younger classmen will be looking up to you. They’re watching to see how you spend your last year.

This is a year of last times.

Your last homecoming game as a student.
Your last home football game.
Your last prom.
Your last set of high school exams.
Your last sports banquet, choir or band concert, art show, or theater performance.
Your last meal in the cafeteria.
Your last time driving to high school or riding the bus.

Your last year.

This is the last year you’ll be able to walk the hallways in between classes, wearing a backpack and carrying your books. These are the final smiles, the final “How are you today?”s, the final hugs. If you see someone who seems hurt or lost, reach out to them. This could be your last chance.

Senior year does not have to be a blow-off year. You CAN make a difference during your last year of high school if you choose to do so.

So, dearest High School Senior, here is my advice for you:

Don’t let people go by unseen. Don’t let kind words go unsaid.

You don’t know if you’ll see any of these students again after you graduate, so reach out to your fellow seniors and the underclassmen too. Share love and smiles.

Be kind to your teachers, too.

Don’t write them off because it’s your last year. They’re people too and they deserve to be treated well. They want to see you succeed. If you need a recommendation for those college applications, don’t be afraid to ask them!

And when the time for graduation comes, be sure you let your teachers know how much you appreciate them. It will mean so much to them.

Study hard!

Pay attention to class! Sure, it’s your last year of high school, but odds are it’s not your last year of education. Even if you don’t go on to college, in the workplace you’ll be expected to learn how to do your job well. So use this time in the classroom to learn how to apply yourself and get a job done as best as you can.

Take the SAT and the ACT.

You don’t know which one you’ll do better on until you take them both. And be sure to treat yourself the afternoon of the test… you just sat through an all morning long thinking session- go watch a movie or get ice cream!

Apply to scholarships early!

Apply to every scholarship you’re eligible for, you never know if you’ll get it or not, but if you don’t apply you for sure won’t win.

And the earlier you apply, the better. You want to get it out of the way so you can not stress about it.

Make memories that you won’t forget in the years to come.

Spend time with your friends. Hang out with your family. Go to a youth group. Take lots of pictures.

Consider making a scrapbook filled with all of the adventures you’ve accomplished throughout high school. This will be something you’ll treasure forever.

Dear Senior, if you take away anything from this long letter, remember this:

Senioritis is a choice, not a disease. You have the choice to make the most of this final year or to waste it away. You can build relationships or ignore your fellow students. You can study hard and make things easier for yourself later, or you can goof off in class.

The choice is yours.

And, as Veronica Roth teaches us in the Divergent series, “One choice can transform you.”
So what will you choose?

I hope and pray that you won’t waste this final year. I hope you’ll live life to the full and have a blast! I hope you won’t look back on this year with regrets.

Go have an awesome final year of high school!

Wishing you the best,
Kara
