Memorizing scripture is important in our home! Psalm 119:11 says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”  That verse alone inspires me to try and memorize the Word!

We have tried different memory verse methods in the past and some have worked better than others.

One thing I know is that my response to situations in life is much more Christ-like and less fleshy if I have scripture stored up in my heart and mind.  I do not always do the best at this; however, this is an area where I’d like to continue to grow!

Scripture memorization takes discipline, intentional effort and frequent practice.  I’ve found these tips below help me!

Scripture memorization takes discipline, intentional effort and frequent practice. Here are five memory verse tips to help get you started.

1. Write the verse down.

When I’m working on a memory verse, I jot it down.  I write the verse in the little notebook that I carry in my purse, in my prayer journal and type it into the notepad feature on my phone.  This helps me to practice it a couple of places.  Sometimes, I just write it over and over again on paper to help get it memorized!

2. Say it out loud.

I repeat the verse out loud a few times to literally hear the scripture.  Also, I rattle it off to my husband now and again!  Repetition is huge when trying to memorize scripture.  Keep it on your mind and keep saying it out loud to yourself.

3. Pray the verse.

As I pray, I try and incorporate the words and theme of my memory verse in my prayers.  I find this easy and beneficial to do as I’m usually working on some aspect of the verse in my life or have it on my heart for some reason.

4. Make it visible.

I like to write the verse on a sticky note and tape it to the bathroom mirror, my computer screen or kitchen window.  When the verse is more visible then it’s easier to remember to practice it both out loud and in prayer.  Seeing something right in front of you will often put the thought or wording right back in your mind.

5. Repeat it to others.

As I mentioned, I say my verse out loud to others.  My mother-in-law and I text verses back and forth to each other and it’s a way for me to repeat the verse by typing it into the text.  Repeating it or sharing with others is just a way to keep the verse on your mind.  Perhaps it may be a blessing to them too!

These tips have helped me to memorize more scripture.  This is a lifelong goal for me and I hope that these tips will help you! Hebrews 4:12 says that “the word of God is alive and active” and my hope and prayer is that this is true in your life as well.

Kelly
