Growing up I’d always hear adults say that there comes a point in your life when wedding season comes around and all of your friends marry and start their own families.

That point in my life is right now it seems. Or at least, the “wedding season” of my life has begun. Last year alone, I attended eight weddings.

This phenomena of having so many people I know marrying all at once has made me feel all sorts of emotions.

Old- because I have friends old enough to get married lol.
Happy– because I love seeing my friends happily in love.
Bittersweet– because often these marriages move my friends away from me.

In January of 2017, I wrote a post called “3 Things To Do When All Your Friends Are Dating… And You’re Not.” Today, I decided to write its sequel and discuss weddings and engagements. Because, why not? :)

So, in honor of wedding season being back in full swing, here are my top wedding attending tips. :)

Five Tips for SURVIVING Wedding Season

Wedding season can be nearly impossible if you're single. Here are five great tips for how to survive wedding season with a smile on your face.

1. Invest in a few good “wedding outfits.”

Rather than buying a new dress every time you receive a wedding invitation, look through your closet and decide if you already have a few dresses you could use for weddings.

If you don’t, then go shopping specifically for a dress to wear to multiple weddings.

I have a nice navy blue dress that I wear solely for weddings and funerals. I have a mint dress that I only wear on very special occasions. (See a similar dress here.) And, of course, I have other dresses too so if neither of those sounds good to me on a particular day I have back-ups to choose from.

Having a few dresses set aside for fancy occasions makes the dresses feel special, but without causing me to spend all of my money.

2. Buy some cards to have as a back up in case you forget to buy a card when you buy the wedding present.

{Not that I have ever done this… ;) }

This could seriously save you a moment of stress.

My recommendation? Buy some cute stationery that you could use for a variety of things: weddings, thank you cards, birthday cards, letters to a friend, etc. That way, you’ll always have a card whenever you need it.

These cards from Amazon are super cute and can be used for all occasions!

3. Learn how to use a registry.

Shopping for wedding gifts is loads of fun…. usually.

If the bride and groom have an online registry, I like to start there. Makes life easier :) Check amazon.com and bedbathandbeyond.com. Sometimes on wedding invitations, it lists other sites where the couple registered.

If the couple hasn’t registered online, I usually have a game of hide-and-go-seek with whatever item I’m trying to find. {Who knew finding a particular cutting board in Bed Bath & Beyond could be like finding a needle in a haystack??} Eventually, if I can’t find what I’m looking for, I ask an employee to help me.

Decide what you like best- online or offline shopping.

Online:

  • Pros:
    • It’s quick and easy
    • You can shop from home
  • Cons:
    • You can’t leave shopping for day-of events.
    • You’d have to remember to buy the item(s) early so they can ship and arrive before the bridal shower or wedding.

Offline:

  • Pros:
    • Great if you like to browse in the store and get other ideas for gifts.
      • For instance, one time I saw some super cute clothespins in Bed Bath and Beyond and just HAD to get them to go with my friend’s wedding gift from her registry because she and I have an inside joke with clothespins.
    • It’s great if you’re a procrastinator (like me) and tend to forget to buy gifts until the day before the event.
  • Cons:
    • Takes more time to go to the store.
    • If you get easily distracted this may not be good for you (refer to the previous clothespins story).

P.S. If you’re a bride and you’re reading this, I totally recommend making a free Amazon wedding registry. Most people already have Amazon accounts and so it would be super easy for them to pick out something from your list and ship it right to you :)

4. A Homemade Gift Idea-

I gave this cute date-night album to a couple who got married a few weeks ago, and it was so fun to put together. If you like to give unique homemade gifts, you might check out The Dating Divas and the other goodies they have in their shop. :)

5. Learn how to “Rejoice with those who rejoice.”

Wedding season can be difficult if you are single. It can seem like your lack of a relationship is under a microscope and everyone is questioning why you don’t have a special someone by your side. But beyond the constant reminders that you’re not getting married, it’s reallllly hard to go alone to a wedding and not have a special someone to sit with. (Pro-Tip: If you’re single and get a plus-one, invite a friend to go with you.)

Wedding season can also be difficult if you’re dating someone. It can remind you that you’re not engaged and cause you to be discontented in your dating-season. You may find that people peg you with questions such as “When will we be attending your wedding?”

Single or dating- either way, as Christians we should “Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep”(Romans 12:15 CSV).

If it’s your friend’s wedding day, I can pretty much guarantee you that she (or he) is doing quite a bit of rejoicing.

So join in! Don’t sulk the day away. Join the party! If you went alone, try to meet new people! Congratulate the happy couple! Plaster a smile on your face and for the sake of your friend, at least pretend to have a good time.

And who knows, maybe you’ll find that you’re enjoying yourself.
