Wanna know an easy way to boost anyone’s day? SNAIL MAIL!!

When I was in elementary school, a couple of my friends and I exchanged letters back and forth. One of these friends lived four hours away. Another lived five minutes away. We wrote letters in sloppy handwriting and they were full of misspelled words. Sometimes we would draw pictures in our letters, or include a coloring sheet for our friend to complete.

I still have most of these letters. They’re great treasures from my childhood.

As we grew older and became busier, our habit of exchanging letters slowly faded. Every now and then, a friend will mail a letter to me, or I’ll mail a letter to a friend. It’s such a great way to let that friend know they were on my mind.

Letter-writing can be such an easy way to make someone’s day and to offer them an encouraging word.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” I’m sure you’re already encouraging your friends in some shape or fashion, and letter writing would be such a great way to add to what you are already doing.

So why shouldn’t we bless someone else through a letter in this way this month?

Everyone loves getting a letter. Snail mail is a fun and easy way to encourage a friend. Write someone a letter today! :)

A quick run down on how mail works (because, sadly, this is becoming uncommon):

  1. Write a letter to a friend. It can be on notebook paper, stationary, or a card. Whatever material you like :) Have fun!
  2. Place your letter in an envelope.
  3. Address the envelope. Your friend’s address goes in the center of the envelope, and your address goes in the top, left hand corner of the envelope.
  4. Put a stamp on the envelope.
  5. Decorate the envelope (if you want). I always like to add a sticker or two on the closing flap, to make sure it stays shut.
  6. Place the letter in your mailbox.
  7. The mail deliver does all the rest :)

So what should we put in these letters?

Great question! Here’s some ideas to get you started:

  • Tell them about your week
  • Tell them something funny you experienced recently
  • Tell them why you love them
  • Tell them why you think they’re awesome
  • Ask them random questions about themselves (EX: If you were a kitchen appliance, which would you be?)
  • Tell them about something that happened recently that made you think of them
  • Share an encouraging Bible verse with them
  • Write them a short story
  • Include a picture of the two of you
  • Send them a coloring sheet. Because, why not? :)

Basically, just be uplifting and let them know you’re thinking about them. It doesn’t have to be a novel, it could be just enough for a note card. It could just be a Bible verse and a quick “Thinking of you! Hope you have a great day!”

What do you think? Ready to make someone’s day through snail mail?

Letter writing is a great way to make a friend smile, and I really encourage you to try it out (or pick it back up, if you’ve done it before) sometime this month.

Let’s get writing :)
