The Intention of the Artist

Yesterday in my Intro to Theatre class my professor randomally pulled up Google Images and started showing us photographs of horses.
Okay then. 
He asked us to describe the photos using adverbs or adjectives. “Majestic.” “Black.” “Strong.” “Graceful.”

He then showed us some drawings of horses- kinda like coloring sheets. He asked us what the differences were between the drawings and the photographs. And then we compared the coloring-book-like-pictures to full out hand-drawn, detailed images of horses. He asked us why these were different, even though they were both drawn.

One guy in the front row pipped up and said it had to do with the intention of the artist- what the artist was trying to convey through his/her image.

The professor agreed with this assertion. He taught us that all art is beautiful, but the purpose and message of the art depends on the intention of the artist.

This got me thinking: God made us and in His eyes we are a work of art, so that means He made us with intention.

The Bible teaches that we are God’s masterpiece.

“For we are God’s masterpiece” (Ephesians 2:10a NLT).

God made us just the way we are, and He thinks we are awesome.

According to what I learned in class yesterday, artists create art with a purpose. There’s a reason behind what they do.
If that is true (and it is), then God must have a reason and a purpose behind making his works of art (us).

So we know who the artist is (God), what the artist made (us), and now we have to wonder why.

The rest of Eph. 2:10 says this: “He created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the things he planned for us long ago.”

God has a plan for our lives.

He made us on purpose and with a purpose. God didn’t make a mistake in making us. He didn’t mess up placing us where He did on the spectrum of time. He didn’t error when He gave us our family and friends and acquaintances.

So let me say it again, God has a plan for our lives.

We were created to glorify God and to make him known.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 NIV).

So in the good times and the bad times, we are to be a shining light pointing to our Creator. He made each of us differently and gave each of us different strengths and weaknesses, trials and triumphs. However, we each have the same purpose: to glorify Him and make Him known.

You are not a mistake. You have a purpose. You were made to shine for your Creator.
