I’m not very artistic, but a few years ago when I saw a picture of a melted crayon art, I knew I had to give this creative, colorful, project a try. Melted crayon art is an easy project anyone can do. Today, I will be walking you through the steps of this project, so you can create your very own melted crayon art.
  • Crayons (I recommend Crayola)
  • Canvas (size according to your preference)
  • Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie/ Black Paint Pen
  • Ruler
  • Rubber Cement
  • White Paint Pen/ White Paint (optional)
  • Puffy Paint (optional)

What You Need:

Step One- Brainstorm!

Figure out what you would like your final product to look like. Which quote would you like to use? For this crayon art, I decided to use the quote “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live” from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling.

Step Two- Pick out the Crayons you want to use

Lay them across the canvas to make sure you have enough. Then, peel off the paper.Tip: Soak the crayons in water to make the peeling process easier.

Step Three- Design the Canvas

Write out your quote in pencil. Use the ruler to make sure the words are evenly spaced and about the same height. Begin the quote a little bit above half way down the canvas.Once you’re satisfied with how the quote looks, go back over the pencil with your sharpie or black paint pen.

Optional: Go over the letters with rubber cement. When the wax of the crayons runs onto the words, it can be hard to peel the wax back off. The rubber cement will help.

Step Four- Lay out the paperless crayons

…In the order that you would like them to be on the canvas.

Step Five- Hot glue the crayons to the canvas

For the first crayon, I apply the glue directly to the crayon and lay it onto the canvas. After that, I just run the glue gun parallel to the crayons that are already on the canvas.
After you have glued all of the crayons onto the canvas, it should look like this:

Step Six- Lay out newspaper

…over the area where you will be blow drying. Sometimes the wax flies all over the place, which can be very messy.

Step Seven- Blow dry!!

This is the most fun part. Play around with your dryer’s settings to see which levels work best for you. I set my hair dryer on high and full heat. Just prop up your canvas, and hold the hair dryer up to the crayons. Turn on the hair dryer, and let ‘er rip!

Keep blow drying until you are satisfied with how it looks.

Step Eight- Scratch off the wax that fell over the letters

Use toothpicks. (This is the least fun part. I recommend doing it while listening to music or watching TV.)

Step Nine- Go back over the letters

…With your sharpie or black paint pen or PUFFY PAINT!!I had puffy paint left over from my Halloween costume, and I decided to try it on the words. I love how it turned out!

Optional: Go around the letters with a white paint pen. This helps the words stand out.

Here’s how mine turned out:

I hope you try this out! Melted crayon art is simple, adorable, and lightens up any room.So grab crayons and a hair dryer, and get going! :)
